Thanks for bringing up the limitations of the portrait mode. 6 engines will be the maximum allowed, i.e. in rare exceptions, we will go for 6 engines. In most of the cases my hope is that 4-5 engines will be enough.

Also, it seems like there might be a need to reconsider the search bar UI for the portrait mode. E.g. regular icons+text in landscape, but big icon buttons in portrait (just brainstorming here).

Re: submitting engine suggestions: I’ll blog about this soon. We will most likely follow a similar process to what we do for Firefox, i.e. file bugs in the locale’s component with the “productization” keyword.

There is very limited space in the bar especially on portrait mode (think windows mobile phones) devices. I think 6 might be too much, but it is a good place to draw the line for a limit.

On our current english browser, there are 7 providers and it is hard to read the text. Maybe sticking with larger icons instead of the text?

also, how does one submit these providers? Is this the same process as Firefox?
